My system for managing money centres around tracking expenses using computer software. There are, of course, several software packages available, but which to choose. Here is a list of software that is currently available, along with details on price. Reviews will be provided...eventually. If you know of any that are missing, please contact me and they will be added.

Program Price Rating Notes
Quicken 2009
[Canada] $37.49-$94.99
$39.99-$67.98
Intuit is the top name in the personal finance software industry, and it's a position that is well earned. Quicken is one of the most user friendly and powerful tools available for managing your spending. The higher priced edition comes with better investment and business tools, but the fundamental money management in the base model is perfectly adequate.

$49.95

I will confess that I had not heard of You Need a Budget until I started researching this list. It has excellent reviews on Amazon, and might be worth a look. In addition to providing tracking capabilities, YNAB is intended to promote forward thinking, essentially giving you a program that tells you to live this month on last month's paychecks. While this will make the start-up of your money management program that much harder, it is a good policy, and so that pain will undoubtedly pay off.

GnuCash

Free

GnuCash is one of the best known home accounting packages available at absolutely no cost. It offers basic recording features, some graphing capability, and it employs the double-entry accounting method used by professionals.
